Job Purpose:

The Data Analytics Engineer / Data Scientist that will primarily focus on developing MI/AI/physics-based data models for condition-based monitoring of its assets deployed worldwide to better assist our customers. In this role, the candidate will contribute to the design, development and deployment of world class rail products and services vital to our customer’s needs. Reporting to the Director of Data Science, this role will enable innovative, strategic, and high-tech solutions for the rail industry through the application of specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities. Work involves independent judgement, problem solving skills, resourcefulness, teamwork, and creativity in ambiguous situations. A high degree of personal initiative is a prerequisite. Typical data science team efforts are a combination of some or all of the key job elements listed below.

The ideal candidate is an experienced self-starter, strong attention to details, with excellent written and verbal skills. Enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-paced, environment and is willing to take on roles outside of comfort zone. Technical aptitude and being well versed in Machine Learning and Data Science tools and processes is a must. The role will work closely with the multiple engineering teams.

Education / Training:

• B.S, M.S, or PhD degree in quantitative discipline such as data science, data analytics, computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics, or other related degree;

• 6+ years of software development experience with B.S., or 5+ years of experience with Master’s degree or 4+ years of experience with a PhD;

• 6+ years of experience with Python, R, SQL, and relational data bases.

Key Job Elements:

• Contribute to the design, development, testing, and deployment of software systems and applications;

• Analyze large amounts of machine sensor data for pattern search;

• Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis;

• Develop anomaly detection, condition based monitoring, and digital twin models;

• Apply ML and other advanced analytical techniques on time series machine sensor data to classify machine failure modes;

• Understand the business needs and develop data-based solutions;

• Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner;

• Support field reported issue resolution through data analysis;

• Perform system integration of ML models;

• Mentor and assist data scientists providing technical assistance and direction as needed;

• Travel as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

• Highly experienced Data Scientist with over 6 years’ experience in Data Extraction, Data Modelling, Data Wrangling, Statistical Modeling, Data Mining, Machine Learning and Data Visualization;

• Expertise in transforming business resources and requirements into manageable data formats and analytical models, designing algorithms, building models, developing data mining and reporting solutions that scale across a massive volume of structured and unstructured data;

• Proficient in managing entire data science project life cycle and actively involved in all the phases of project life cycle including data acquisition, data cleaning, data engineering, features scaling, features engineering, testing and validation and data visualization;

• Proficient in Machine Learning algorithms (such as Regression Models, Decision Tree, Random Forests, and others) and Predictive Modeling;

• Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc;

• Experience working in large scale database environment like Hadoop and MapReduce, with working mechanism of Hadoop clusters, nodes and Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS);

• Strong experience with Python (2.x,3.x) and R to develop analytic models and solutions;

• Proficient in Python 2.x/3.x with SciPy Stack packages, including NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, Matplotlib and IPython;

• Working experience in Hadoop ecosystem and Apache Spark framework such as HDFS, MapReduce, HiveQL, SparkSQL, PySpark;

• Very good experience and knowledge in provisioning virtual clusters under AWS cloud which includes services like EC2, S3, and EMR;

• Experience with Snowflake data warehouse;

• Experience in integrating ML models into larger deployed systems;

• Proficient in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Python Matplotlib, R Shiny to create visually powerful and actionable interactive reports and dashboards;

• Knowledge on time series analysis, Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm and Text Mining;

• Experience with elastic search and NoSQL databases, such as Cassandra;

• Experience in Agile methodology and SCRUM process;

• Strong business sense and abilities to communicate data insights to both technical and nontechnical clients;

• Competent to perform all job duties without close supervision.

Desired:

• Experience analyzing telematics data from equipment such as engines, machines, and others;

• Experience with PFA model deployments.
