Primary Role
Performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the operation and maintenance of wastewater plant systems. Assists other operators with performing operation and maintenance work. Assists Plant Superintendent with operational process controls. Performs plant operations duties including checking, troubleshooting, and improving wastewater treatment facilities.Key Accountabilities

  • Reports unusual conditions to management with recommendations for correction.
  • Completes tasks assigned by the Plant Superintendent in timely manner.
  • Works flexible schedule to fill-in for operators or lab technicians as needed.
  • Continues as stand-by operator and is on-call for emergency situations for situations such as sewage spills, storm water runoff, power failures, chemical leakages, etc.
  • Takes charge of sludge drying bed removal tasks and other solids handling work.
  • Assists in managing work schedules and coordinates hauling service pick-up schedule.
  • Prepares monthly sludge loading sheets and sludge control sheets on the special excel spreadsheet format.
  • Processes invoices through SAP and P-Card statements.
  • Takes charge of purchasing bulk chemicals and assists management with plant’s chemical inventory monthly report.
  • Ensures that operational data input sheets and other process data are recorded in the lab bench books correctly and completely.
  • Validates records weekly and monthly.
  • Corrects errors and completes any missing data. Inputs operational data for recordkeeping.
  • Attends monthly tailgate safety meetings and semi-annual safety training.
  • Provides assistance with lab compliance and process control analysis as well as train others for lab work and providing quality control for the lab.
  • May be fill the lab tech absence after received proper training.
  • Maintains timecards, recording hours spent to complete tasks.

  • Knowledge of the operation, methods, practices, techniques, and servicing requirements of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Knowledge of safety practices in the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment used in facilities.
  • Knowledge of procedures, materials, tools, equipment and safety hazards and precautions common to assigned area of responsibility Ability to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external customers as well as the general public.
  • Ability to determine what equipment, tools, labor, and materials will be needed to complete assigned projects.
  • Ability to use both hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in operational duties, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal associates, supervisor personnel, management personnel, and vendors. Ability to read and interpret gauges, recording devices and general plant instrumentation.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance records with tough book.
  • Ability to write legibly and make simple mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, shovel, sweep, walk and climb status.
  • Ability to operate company motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors under all weather conditions including summer heat.
  • Ability to use computer/mobile devices tools to analyze and report plant data.
  • Be able to get Hawaii Wastewater Operator’s Certificate after two years of hiring.Experience/Education
  • At least high school graduation diploma is required by hiring. Years of experience vary depending upon level of position open and must be in wastewater utility industry as follows:
  • Operator OIT Required to obtain operator certificate within State mandated guidelines
  • Operator 1: 1-3 years experience
  • Operator 2: 3-5 years experience
  • Operator 3: 5-8 years experience
  • Sr. Operator: 8+ years experienceOther
  • This position is subject to call back, overtime and weekend/holiday call outs. Position has the potential for exposure to dust, pollen, chemicals, water, and sewage.
