As our Data Science intern, you will support efforts to reinvent health and human services and make a lasting difference for future generations navigating these systems. We are looking for someone who can derive valuable insights to inform stakeholders and initiative level decisions.

Our 8-week summer internship class runs from June 5, 2023 - July 28, 2023.

Project details:

The selected intern will work on one the following projects:

  • Project option #1: Build a model to predict medical conditions.

The goal of this project is to use Unite Us data to build a production-level model to predict multiple medical conditions. The intern will learn to use Amazon's Sagemaker to do data preparation & statistical analysis, and then build & deploy a multi-class, multi-label classifier model to help predict specific medical needs.

  • Project option #2: Build a model for the growth of referral networks.

The goal of this project is to use Unite Us data to investigate how referral networks grow and evolve. Then, the intern will build a predictive model that can inform decisions for downstream teams and help optimize the referral process and, ultimately, better serve our population in need. In either case, after building and evaluating the model, the intern will derive insights and make recommendations for future use, and then present findings to the team.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform statistical analyses using SQL and Python.
  • Learn to use Amazon's Sagemaker to process data, build and deploy models.
  • Based on the results of research conducted over the summer, quantify the value of using our platform and share findings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create a presentation tailored to both a technical and non-technical audience to communicate your findings, and help stakeholders make informed data-driven decisions that will bring value to the company.
  • Collaborate with the Data team and other departments to understand which areas would benefit most from research results

You're a great fit for this Internship if:

  • You are either a rising undergraduate senior or graduate student pursuing a degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Math, Physics, Computer Science or related field)
  • You have basic knowledge of Python and SQL/pandas, with a desire to expand on them
  • You are a critical thinker, have scientific curiosity, are a self-starter and can work independently
  • You are organized and have keen attention to detail
  • You can confidently and clearly communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • You have at least 1 year of general work experience
